There are several advantages to using Slugger

The obvious benefit to using Slugger is that you can use an external application and still be able to set your post slug. This is the main reason that we originally put Slugger together. However, there are a few other reasons to use Slugger that should not be overlooked.

The first reason and quite possibly one of the better reasons to use Slugger is to improve search. Often times a post’s slug may contain words or phrases that are not in the article, but they directly relate to the article. For instance if you are writing a post about your son’s baseball game, you may never ever put the word baseball into the post. The post title might be “My son’s first game”, and the post content may contain some information about when he was up to bat for the first time, or how he hit a home-run. But nowhere in the post does it say the word baseball because it is apparent that the post is about baseball.

So how does Slugger help in this regard? If you had a slug for the above described post of ‘ethan-baseball’ then it would make that post pop up when you do a search for baseball on your blog.

As a side note: The same benefits occur if you use a great WordPress plugin called the Ultimate Tag Warrior. Not only does UTW add a tagging engine and portal to your site, but it also puts a ton of metadata inside of the post, making your site and it’s post much more easy to find.

Another great advantage to using Slugger is to see if you have used a slug in the past. I know I’ve done this many times — you post a new post and the slug has already been used so WordPress automatically appends a ‘2′ to the end of your slug. If you are unsure if you have used a slug before, do a quick search on your blog and poof, you’ll know in a hurry.
